The I CAN Story

A Message from Loretta Manning, MSN, RN, GNP

Co-Founder/President

My dream has been to help students succeed in learning since working with nursing students in school, and experiencing how many students struggled to learn the large volumes of nursing concepts and pharmacology.

It all began when one of my students was unable to identify the four defects of Tetralogy of Fallot. In order to assist her, I drew an image and wrote a mnemonic on a scrap piece of paper. The next day she was able to answer a question from a mother of a newborn about the congenital heart defect after the nurse was unable to recall the specifics of the congenital heart defect. The student linked the heart defect in her brain and was able to successfully review the facts. The nurse was impressed and asked the student to share the strategy with her, so she could also remember. This was a student who typically struggled to get Cs, and started getting As and Bs. With this renewed self-confidence, she started excelling in clinical as well. She shared with the dean that her success was from the memory strategies I was sharing with her group both in clinical and the classroom. She was now learning the priority standards, concepts, and pharmacology that were necessary for her to master. Once she mastered the information, I was able to assist her to learn how to develop the skills of clinical judgment.

With the encouragement of many students and faculty, I continued developing memory techniques for classroom presentations, clinical to recall priority pharmacology facts, and NCLEX-RN® Review Courses. I was invited to participate in writing a question book to prepare nursing graduates for the NCLEX-RN® entitled NCLEX-RN® 101: How to Pass! This was the birth of I CAN Publishing, Inc., also known as Creative Approaches to Nursing. When you think of I CAN, we want you to know our books, resources, and services are all from identified needs from nursing students and faculty.

Our mission is to inspire nursing students and graduates to realize you CAN do this! We also want to inspire nursing faculty to continue with their professional growth and development. I always have enjoyed being a ‘student builder’, and love working with students to help experience the connections. We also enjoy being a ‘faculty builder’. The butterfly on each of our books signifies transformation. While we may not be able to do the work for you, we can provide you with simple approaches to teaching and learning to assist with your journey in nursing school and with NCLEX® Prep.

Learning should be fun; it is a lifelong process! Thank you for allowing the I CAN family to be a part of your journey! We believe in you! Now, the next step is for you to have faith and believe you CAN be successful with your learning! We look forward to hearing from you, so we can assist with your educational needs.

Warm regards,

Loretta

The most important thing in nursing is not so much to obtain more and more facts, but to

TRANSFORM how we THINK about them!
